When I started my journey to becoming a midwife, I was working at two area hospitals as a unit coordinator and nursing assistant in the float pool. At that point, I had worked in healthcare for nearly 10 years.
While exposed to myriad specialty areas in healthcare, cutting edge technology, and surrounded by many excellent healthcare practitioners, I made an even more powerful connection with the Midwives Model of Care. The Midwives Model of Care emphasizes providing high quality, individualized care. It is rooted in acknowledging pregnancy and birth as a normal processes. Rather than viewing the pregnant person merely through the lens of technology, the midwife uses low-intervention, hands-on techniques, has increased continuity with clients, and incorporates the client in decision making about their own care.
My training as a midwife allows me to be an expert in normal perinatal care as a whole, but I believe that the client is the expert in their own body and day to day experience; bringing these two areas of expertise together can make for an excellent, empowering partnership with safe outcomes.
I believe that the ability to truly hear my client on any detail—from concerns to joys—is one of the best gifts that I can offer as a practitioner.
Since graduating from midwifery school in 2013, I have had the joy of becoming the mother to the most wonderful and vibrant little boy! My personal experience of pregnancy, birth, postpartum, breastfeeding and beyond is filled with moments of pure bliss, struggle, fear, triumph, joy and pride. It is because of these experiences that I am filled with passion daily to support clients in finding empowerment in their own fertility, pregnancy, birthing, postpartum, breastfeeding journeys.
As a faculty member of Birthwise Midwifery School, I regularly spend time in a classroom setting, helping to educate the next generation of midwives. When I am not in the office or the classroom, I have been found on a lake with my husband and son in our family canoe, on a hike, relaxing with a good book or a knitting project, getting my hands dirty in our garden, or playing cars with my son.
